This week, we were privy to the techniques, inspiration, and humor of the great ALBIE MULCAHY. He is recognized worldwide for his technique of “Shaping Dry Hair.” He has not only taught us something tangible that we can use and bring to our clients, he has left us inspired. After our class, we feel ready to take on the world! He has reminded us why we became hair stylists. He genuinely loves what he does, believes in the ability to transform hair by creativity and has taught us to do the same. Albie- and his extremely positive take on life and career- has left us rejuvenated.
Check out all that Albie has done for the industry:
Albie Mulcahy – On being inspired, living your dreams, and loving what you do!
As the previous Sahag Director of Education, as well as their ‘Cultural Ambassador’, Albie Mulcahy, owner of VLVT Salon in downtown Saint Petersburg, Florida, insists that – in true dry cut fashion – an intense connection with art, hair, and fashion will reveal your imagination’s inner layers, quirks, and highlights.“Become a cultured person and focus that culture on hair… constantly feed your imagination. Study art, go to museums, invest in international fashion publications, follow the news, follow the street kids’ trends, look to fashion and music as inspiration. Simply hone your imagination to a context appropriate for your client.”
Of course, all the while, you must also love what you do! As Mr. Mulcahy explains, loving yourself (as well as your craft) will free your imagination, letting it flourish.
“When you cut from the heart, you are cutting from the imagination. Visually, things just begin to fall into place – let the imagination guide the hands.”
With a career in hair that spans 35+ years, he has worked throughout South America, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, Europe, Southeast Asia and more. Albie has had the pleasure and honor of being one of the few American hairdressers to be invited multiple times to work at the very prestigious Alternative Hair Show in London, England—a cause used to raise money for Leukemia Research. As it has always been one of Albie’s passions to help children in need, he has donated and participated in numerous events for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, as well as other US based charities and events to raise awareness of childhood cancers.
Those who have attended any of Albie’s classes know that he believes in mixing humor along with his extensive knowledge. But he will be quick to explain that he does not teach—he inspires.
“Our goal is for hairdressers to leave inspired and fall in love with us and our industry all over again! We inspire you to use the imagination that was pushed aside for the traditional cutting techniques over the years. Release your boundaries, and use your imagination!”
Albie has lived and worked in all of the most fashionable cities in the United States, including New York, Los Angeles, Miami, Atlanta and Boston. To this day he continues to travel to each of theses cities so that he can continue to take care of his ‘special’ clients, as well as Charlston SC and Detroit MI on an 8 week cycle.
But in between all the traveling, volunteering, teaching, and inspiring, Albie is the owner of VLVT Salon in St. Petesburg Fl as well as being co owner of V L V T acadimes with his long time friend and industry ICON Dwight Miller, A place where hairdresser’s from around the country come to learn his UNIQUE style of shapping hair dry. VLVT, which stands for “visual learning, visual technique”, is the brainchild of Mulcahy. It is Albie’s wish that with his world wide experience’s and the knowledge he has gained that you will allow him or his hand picked staff to give you the true VLVT experience.
We thank Albie for more than just a ‘cutting class’.
Thanks for taking us back and reminding us of our dreams while sharing yours with us!
